Installing

What does Prunable need to run?

Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) or Windows 11, 64-bit. The setup program includes everything else, .NET too, so there's nothing extra to install. It takes about 140 MB once installed.

Windows says "Windows protected your PC". Is it safe?

Windows SmartScreen warns about programs it hasn't seen many people run yet, even signed ones, and a new release always starts out unseen. Choose More info: the publisher should read Loophead Labs LLC. If it does, choose Run anyway.

If the publisher is missing or different, the file didn't come from us. Delete it and download Prunable again from this site. You can also compare the file's SHA-256 checksum with the one on the download section.

My antivirus flagged Prunable.

Prunable deletes files, edits the registry and runs as administrator, which is exactly what antivirus programs watch for. We send every release to Avast's whitelisting programme (which covers Avast, AVG, Avira and Norton), but a brand-new release can still be held for a while.

Check the file is signed by Loophead Labs LLC (right-click it, Properties, Digital Signatures). Then let us know through the contact form, with the name of your antivirus, and we'll report it as a false positive.

Why does it ask for administrator rights?

Windows keeps its temporary files, update downloads and crash dumps where only administrators can delete them. More on how Prunable uses those rights.

How do I update Prunable?

Prunable doesn't update itself. Press Check for updates at the top of the window: if there's a newer version, the button says so, and choosing it opens the download. Run the new setup program over the old one. Your license, settings and list of changes are kept. If you have Pro, the weekly license check also tells you about a new version.

Versions before 1.0.1 don't have the button: download the new version from this site.

How do I uninstall Prunable?

In Windows Settings, go to Apps, find Prunable and choose Uninstall. Weekly maintenance is turned off with it. Your license, settings and list of changes are kept, so reinstalling picks up where you left off.

Free and Pro

What does the free edition do?

It finds and cleans everything it scans for in safe mode: temporary files, caches, Windows Update downloads, browser and app caches and the rest of Clean up's categories, and nothing is ever deleted until you review the list. Startup, Programs, Memory, Health and the space report work in the free edition too.

What does Pro add?

Advanced mode, leftovers after uninstalling, removing several bloatware apps at once, weekly automatic maintenance, Cloud files (making synced files online-only), and the project build-folder tools, which find build output of projects you haven't touched in months and trim old Rust builds.

Pro is $29.99, once, for up to 3 PCs. There's no subscription.

How does the free trial work?

Open Get Pro in Prunable and choose Try it free for 7 days. Everything in Pro works for 7 days, then Prunable goes back to the free edition; nothing you set up is lost. Starting the trial needs an internet connection. Each PC gets one trial.

Can I get a refund?

Yes, within 14 days of buying. See refunds.

Your license

Where's my license key, and how do I activate it?

The key comes by email from Lemon Squeezy, who handle our payments, right after you buy. In Prunable, open Get Pro, paste the key and press Activate.

How do I move my license to another PC?

A key works on 3 PCs at a time. To free one, open Pro on the PC you no longer use and choose Deactivate this PC, then activate the key on the new one. If that PC is gone for good, write to us with your order number and we'll free it.

Does Prunable need to be online?

Only now and then. It checks your license about once a week when it can, and keeps working offline for up to 30 days after the last successful check.

The Pro button says "Pro: check needed".

Prunable couldn't confirm your license recently. Usually it has been offline for more than 30 days, or the PC's clock was changed. Connect to the internet, open Get Pro, and press Activate with your key; it won't use up another PC. If the window says the key was refused, for example after a refund, contact us.

Using Prunable

How do I undo a change?

Open the Startup tab and its list of changes. Each change has an Undo button, and there's one to undo everything. Leftovers of uninstalled programs went to the Recycle Bin, and Undo puts them back. Caches and temporary files can't be restored, which is why Prunable only removes the kind that rebuild themselves.

How does it decide a project's build output is safe to remove?

It looks for build folders (Rust target, node_modules, .next, Python environments and the like) and how long ago their project last changed. Folders of projects untouched for months are offered; a rebuild brings them back. For Rust, it keeps the newest build of each dependency and anything built in the last 7 days, and doesn't touch anything changed in the last 3 days.

Can I stop it cleaning a particular drive?

Yes. Untick the drive in Prunable's header and Clean up leaves it alone, including what an earlier scan found on it.

Does Prunable run in the background or collect data?

No. It does nothing until you press a button, except weekly maintenance if you turn it on. It sends nothing about your PC or your files anywhere. The only network traffic is starting a trial and checking your license. See privacy.
